If you play for real money, live games are better. There are still to many ways you can be cheated on line.



Three other players in your room working in collusion with cell phones can put you at a considerable disadvantage.

Online poker is great. It allows people to practice a game they love 24/7. The last three world champions practiced online before winning the World Series Of Poker in Las Vegas. These guys are all millionaires now.



All the sites let you play for play money and also real money. I've won thousands since 2003 when I taught myself to play. Some of my prizes have come from local pub league events, but the practice I got online was instrumental in my wins in real life.



People that talk about addiction and lives being ruined are just being stupid. You could use the same argument to ban guns, alcohol, cigarettes, lottery and even motorcycles or cars. I don't see America rushing to ban these highly addictive and/or deadly things, so why poker? Millions of Americans play poker every week. You can barely turn on the TV these days without seeing a poker game. It's a great all American pass time and we should be sensible. Let's fully legalize, tax and regulate it instead of giving in to the fanatical right that wants to ban everything.

Lose at online poker? Play the .10/.25 NL tables at Party Poker. The most you can lose at a table is $25. There are a few decent players, but for the most part they are just begging to give their money away. I usually make $50/day only playing 1 or 2 hours.



So to answer the question, online poker is a gooood thing!

Online poker is gambling, so really you are asking if gambling is a good thing or a bad thing. The answer is relative.



Some people can play for fun or small amounts of cash without losing much or becoming addicted. Others can afford to play for hundreds, lose and be okay with it.



The problem comes in when people gamble more than they can afford to lose. It's all relative to the persons personality. If they are compulsive or an addict by nature, gambling in general is probably not a good thing for them.

Playing is believing - you can look at it as a fun activity and you have the belief that you can win and enjoy the game.

Winning is not always related to money, you can gain a personal enjoyment. One easy way to find out if it's 'good' or 'bad' for you is to enter what are called 'freeroll' tournaments.



Many poker players who play online don't realise that you can actually play poker completely for free and still win real money. This is done by playing in 'freeroll' tournaments.



Freeroll tournaments are very simple to explain: you play for free with no cost required to join the table and the online poker room still offers real money prizes to the winner(s).

It's a wonderful thing. Poker is a game of skill, but there is luck involved. If you know how to manage your bankroll and avoid going on tilt, you should be alright.



Either way it's a very entertaining and strategic game no matter where you play. I think most players prefer playing live though.

Good. Most good sites allow you to play with "play money" so you don't have to use the real thing. I made $40,000 play money within a week of playing and it was great. At the same time, I know I could've lost that much just as easily. That's the sobering thought that keeps my credit card in my pocket.

Or more seriously: gambling can be fun but also addictive. Sitting in front of a computer you can lose track of time (right now I am a case in point). Combining the two, where it is hard to check up on the prospective addict, or depressed loser, is questionable.
