The same reason I can go all the way up the board on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" while I'm at home, but completely phase out sometimes when taking an exam. It's easy to perform when there's no pressure.

Another thing you might have going against you is the caliber of competition. Maybe the tournament players are more capable than your usual opponents.

If you are a winning player in ring games, you are well on your way to being a winner in tourneys. Calculating pot odds doesn't change, so the groundwork is already laid.

What you must, must, must do to help your tournament strategy is read "Harrington on Hold 'Em" volumes one and two. Dan Harrington (WSOP champ 1995)has written the best guide for tournament poker ever. The first volume covers the early and middle stages of the tournament and relies on many of the basic strategies to be found in most of the 2+2 books. The second volume blows all previous strategy books out of the water with concepts that are of vital importance to successful tournament play.

Good luck.
